1998 - Now

During these years, Marion County was plagued by the biggest economic downturn since the great depression of the 1930s. The sheriff’s office shrunk from 900 employees to the 700s.

Silver Springs Park which had long been privately run, had fallen victim to the economic downturn. It was purchased by the State of Florida, who closed the adjoining water park, Wild Waters. Which remains vacant today.

The county also has gone through the challenges of the 2020 outbreak of COVID-19. With the shutdown of businesses and schools, Marion County officials worked together to insure the survival of local businesses and keep our citizens safe.
